Nothing can be created or destroyed, Just transformed from one form of energy into another, the very law that governs life as we know it.
So if nothing is ever destroyed, does that mean our soul/ our conscience is recycled, Because according to the smartest men who have ever lived nothing can be destroyed. So Can we truly die, or do we just join the dirt from whence we came. Is the universe one big living thing.
Cool huh!

Your thoughts, memories and emotions are generated from within your brain. Once your brain ceases to exist how can you create or retain consciousness or memory? What guarantee is there that consciousness can be recycled after you lose the engine necessary to create it?
Have you ever watched that nutjob John Edwards. He can commune with the spirits and has put forward compelling evidence to the contrary.
I don’t think anybody *knows* what happens when we die. There’s a boatload of theories/beliefs/convictions but until it actually happens nobody can authoritatively say. Same goes for NDE’s. It’s a NEAR death experience. If you come back then your’re obviously not dead.
@ lucy4 well thats just depressing really, here i was all hopefull and everything. Im just kidding, i am inclined to agree to with you, when we die so does our mind, sadly, But its just nice to wonder sometimes.
Peace 🙂
er I meant after we die–not when
@Unique; I’ve wondered the same thing many times and I didn’t mean to depress you. I like to think of death as a dreamless sleep that lasts forever.
@lucy4 you didnt depress me i was only joking about that, I have pondered life and death for years myself, it has always fanaciated me because people can find an answer for almost anything in this world, But no one can tell you what happens when you die.
So i was always curious.
Thats exactly how i thought of it aswell, a “dreamless sleep that lasts forever” is a perfect way to put it, I once said i thought it was just a dark void filled only with our thoughts, Wouldnt that be hell, just you and your thoughts for eternity!
🙂
It’s ok to be curious. I doubt that trees or fish ever wonder about an afterlife.
I dont think trees wonder anything, and i dont think a fish has a very long memory span so it wouldnt remember even if it thought of the meaning of life! 🙂 :p
Trees and fish, So random i love it.!!
🙂
Dolphins are actually quite clever.
Dolphins not a Fish its a mammal like you and me. Provided your not a fish 🙂
So let’s say that in this vast universe of ours there’s intelligent life on other planets. Do “they” have a seperate God? Are their beliefs right and are ours wrong? Do we all go to an inter-species party in the afterlife? Who gets to pick the band?
Yeah, I stand corrected.
Penguin actually and believe it or not we have broadband and 3G reception at the north pole. Typing is the biggest problem.
@lucy4 its the party throwers get to pick the band im afraid, I think its all just one god, like how muslims and christians pray to different names, both meaning god, its all the one. How do you know the Aliens dont already live among us, look at George Bush, Sly Stallone, no way that guys human! 🙂
@Duke, Im sorry to have to do this, Honestly it pains me in ways i cant describe, but penguins live in the south pole. 🙂
LoL, this is shit is turning crazy!
That is assuming the soul exists…
@willTickin I think therfore i am! If not a soul we atleast have our conscience. thats waht i mean by soul anyhow!
Oops,
But the humbolt penguin lives in south America
@Duke: a Penguin could peck away at a keyboard with their beak, right? I could lose nine fingers and it wouldn’t affect how quickly I type.
Thats Still south 🙂 , and i am only half right, there is penguins in the north cept they can fly so there no considered penguins.
How the hell did we get on the topic of animals, I was going for a deep conversation, LOL.
🙂
But the consciousness is explained by the brain, literally neurons firing. There is nothing to say that this unique and is comprised of energy aka our soul.
You could simply say it is our mind, which is apart of the body, which decomposes after death…would you call that another plane of existence?
There is nothing to argue that the soul exists as this separate thing apart from our bodies, nor that it is an eternal thing( considering we cannot even comprehend permanence / eternity.
I agree with what WillTicken said and it sounds like the sort of thing I would say if I were sober.
As for god, I’m not going to say a superior being does not exist – because it is impossible to prove from experience nor reason the metaphysical.
Even so doesn’t mean god is good and created you with a soul and wants you existing forever.
Also what created god anyhow?
I’m going with ockham’s razor; we don’t need god to explain why the world is here, how we came about, etc etc. So why create a being that comes with even MORE problems and questions.
@will, Now were talking! ok, so you agree that our brain is energy and therefore it cant be created or destoryed, so when we die and die we shall, yes we will decompose but thats not being destoryed thats be absobed by the fungus and mold and tiny animals, so we are transformed into enregy for those animals to continue there lives.
I would like to think that the energy from our brain must go somewhere, but as you say it just neurons firing, so its like a big battery and when it shuts down i think our conscience just diperses into electromagnitism.
Sadly. SO i guess i just agreed with you, I wish i could argue the latter, but im a man of logic, not faith.
🙂
Damn it. It’s 1:09 am and I’m on an Internet forum again talking to people about religion, the afterlife and amphibians. Shit, I thought I wasn’t going to do that anymore.
Its 1:16 were i live. Where do you live, Im in ireland.
Yeah its sad truth for us all, i have a stack of books on reptiles and Amphibians for just such ocasions.
@Will; I used to have a hard time understanding the concept of eternity also until somebody used the analogy of numbers to explain it.
If you start at zero and count forward you will never stop running out of numbers. You can always add a zero after nine and put a 1 at the beginning of whatever number you’re at. There is no final number.
The same thing is true if you start at zero and count backwards. You can keep going for infinty.
Then when you add in decimal points it really gets mind boggling….the possibilities are literally endless.
Well of course our brain exists, and we understand that electricity and neurons make us think and our sense let us perceive. What I’m also saying that it all has to be there for us to be conscious, I don’t think if it were all broken apart and we were “absorbed” we would still be a thinking thing. Sure you could say a PART of you exists, what you’re body was composed of…of course. But is that REALLY you? I surely don’t think so.
I think that “energy” in our brain is dispersed when we die along with the rest of our body. I don’t think it has the special properties that keep a “soul”. We NEED a brain for thoughts and such – and it is proven to show how the brain creates our thoughts and personalities.
Yes sadly. I mean I’m more a person of logic too. But I’m going to agree with Kant in that it isn’t irrational to NOT believe in god, but it isn’t irrational to think god does exist – it’s simply beyond our realm of understanding.
It’s a leap of faith for god. Then it’s another leap of faith for his attributes being all good, all powerful, etc. and that we also have a soul that lives forever. Too many leaps of faith it seems to me…
No I mean it is humanly impossible to understand eternity @lucy. Have you experienced eternity? No? So how do you know what it is? The concept of forever it is a mere concept, and can be mistaken. You can’t understand those endless possibilities. But I also speak in the means of time, can you give me an example of something that is eternal? Well you wouldn’t know, because you’re not eternal now are you?
Numbers are eternal. There is no starting point and no ending.
@ will, I never said oue brain doesnt exist, In fact i believe everything you believe. Except who the hell is Kant.
So in short i agree, Its just too many damn questions and no answers.
@ lucy, numbers start at zero, dhaaa 🙂
Zero, -1, -2, -3, etc…
AHHHH ok, but negitave numbers dont exist, thats a law of alegbra!
Zero is at the center of Infinty
That’s just a concept again. Have you seen a quantity of which has no starting nor ending? Then I’d accept numbers.
@unique: I just meant to clarify what I meant by the brain and consciousness.
Kant is a famous 17th century philosopher. He writes a book about reason and partially about our limits.
Aye, no answers.
we can’t add, subtract, multiply or divide negative numbers?
Well, I’m going to sleep. Have to sober up by 9:30 for my appointment at the barbers. I’m starting to look like Elvis. In fact it’s so bad, I’m too embarrassed to go out in public.
@ Will, I really must catch up on my 17th century reading! 🙂
@ lucy, its the the left and the right of it actually 🙂
We derive numbers from quantities that our senses have perceived. Then we REASON that there is a number 999999999999999999, but doesn’t mean we have EXPERIENCED that quantity. Reason is imperfect and can easily be wrong. I’m just saying you learn most things a posteriori – after the experience.
As Hawking once said, it’s a meaningless question. It would be like asking, what is one mile north of the north pole?
As for negative numbers – can you have a negative amount of something? Can you please walk -2 miles? Abstract idea.
@ duke, Not a penguin anyway
@Duke: ha, elvis eh? Nice.
Also I agree with Hawking.
@Will; Numbers are just a metaphor I was using to provide as an example of understanding Infinity.
@ will, thats what i said, negitave numbers were created to help solve algebra by the great einstein.
The only direction that you can travel fom the North Pole is south.
Ever have a negative number in your bank account?
Metaphors and analogies are weak arguments.
You’re just reasoning that there are an infinite amount of numbers.
You cannot prove such, they cannot be perceived by the senses, etc etc.
@lucy, only too often.
Well no I haven’t seen a negative number in my bank account.
That’s an expression saying you owe that amount – not that you yourself own $-5
and the worth is not really tangible. Sure it’s money, but can you ask for the $-100 at the bank? It’s an idea that you’re in debt and owe that amount of money.
Well it been fun, but i have to sleep, i have to go to work in 5 hours.
Tomorrow i think we should discuss a less contraversal topic, like whats the best pancake topping?
Peace 🙂
@Will, I can prove that there are an infinite number of numbers. Google *what is the last number*. There are named numbers that if written down numerically would never fit even you used the entire surface of the planet to write it on. Don’t take my word for it though, please look it up yourself.
Maple syrup of course.
And night.
Perceived by the senses? This has nothing to do with sight, sound, smell, taste or touch. It’s perceived by thought.
G’nite Unique, Thanks
I’m saying things cannot be proven until a posteriori – after the experience. You cannot explain and understand what you haven’t experienced in some sort.
Thought is reason, and it has its limits.
How can you not understand that numbers don’t end even if you haven’t spent every waking moment of your existence counting them?
I understand why that is thought, you can take 0 and keeping adding on forever. But it doesn’t mean that number exists. It’s merely an idea and thought.
I can think about a long line, but I can’t imagine and fathom a line that is infinite. I’ve never seen an infinite line, I can form an idea of what it may sort of look like – doesn’t mean it’s correct.
I’m just saying sure you can think of whatever number you please, but just because it’s thought, doesn’t necessarily mean it exists.
Plus mostly I was talking about time and the existence of objects or beings or whatever as eternal. ‘Cause people describe the universe or god as eternal, but how could you know?
Anyway I got to go afk…
There are lots of mediums who can talk to dead people.
Unfortunately, all of the dead people they talk to don’t seem to have very good memories, and don’t have anything interesting to say.
They do all still love their living relatives, though, and they are grateful for the flowers that were put on their graves. And they want everyone to know that they are alright and to not worry about them.
Were it not for specific information like this that can only have come from a dead person, I’d probably start to doubt that any of it was true.
We are all eternal spirits having a human experience. Energy can not be destroyed.
Read the Conscious Omniverse by David Watson. The best explanation of death and anything else related to existence and soul.
so a circle isn’t an infinite line?
Hm, I can see this debate is still raging. Still can’t sleep.
Well it’s been 14 mins since the last comment. Perhaps they are looking up the word ‘infinite’ in the Oxford English dictionary. I doubt that would be much use to them though.
My brain is going round in circles.
anybody heard from distant.road lately?
No, I was wandering where distant.road has been. She alwaysssss comments on my poetry. She hasn’t on the last few of my posts and I haven’t seen her in the feed.
i know. getting worried/starting to wonder…. no, brain, don’t go there!
Hey Yoda; OB1 drops in from time to time although I’ve never seen any other SW alumni here.
@Duke; I went out to walk the Marlboro mile. Infinite; extending indefinitely; endless. (Numbers).
me too, hope distant road is okay.
🙁 I wish I knew a way to get hold of distant.road. just to make sure she’s been busy and not…u know
yeah. sigh…. :'(
me too.:( hopefully she’ll post soon,it’s only been a few days right?
about 2 days, to be exact.
i guess we shouldn’t panic or worry too much,at least not yet, something probably just came up.hopefully she’ll be back on soon!! she’s totally missed.:(
yupyup.
Hey where’s Elvis..
