TEDx How do YOU define yourself? Through others? Through haters? Don’t. Don’t let others write your story for you. You are the author of you diary. No one should control your life.
some people just have so much mental power, it baffles me, may the ones that do live a full and fulfilling life and not be brought down by people who comment or hate a person because of their looks, in the end we all die old, all wrinkled, all equal.
I certainly like the message, but like many messages of hope, it seems unrealistic to me. I’m not trying to rain on the parade, but we’re social animals. We do define ourselves according to the values of our culture, our community, and our experiences within these. Though someone may overcome a lifetime of hatred and ostracism, it’s not a likely outcome. Chronic physical, financial, sexual, institutional, and emotional abuse, without what appear viable recourses, take their tolls. Without sufficient social support, and with the particulars of an individual’s nature, not letting “others write your story for you” for many is vanishingly improbable.
The message sounds nice, as it’s meant to, but I don’t find it to be consistent with the nature of the animal.
Yes I agree with you in some points. We are social animals. However, even if a group of people have the same values in culture and define themselves according to their community, every single person is different. Whether in looks or personality, everyone is different. The reason I find this video remarkable is because she is mentally strong despite her different appearance. Why? Because of all the comments she received. She didn’t let others write her story. She didn’t take her own life even if she has to deal with constant bullying as well as her disorder. She made the decision to be who she is rather than agreeing to the status as the ugliest woman. The purpose of posting this video on this site is to show everyone that although someone may be a social outcast, everyone can fight their way through. Obviously if I hadn’t seen this video, I would judge her by her appearance but after knowing her story, not only I but all those who were judging her will find her inspiring and just amazing. Now she has lots of followers who love her for who she is and find her beautiful inside and out. If she had “let others write her story”, she would have been long gone from this world.
