It’s human arrogance driven by ego to believe “human existence” is anything other than just another occurrence in a much larger spectrum. Consciousness is a slow burning curse. We claim to be a higher form of life because we possess cognitive thought, yet we have absolutely no idea why we are actually here. So we create countless forms of abstraction to both give ourselves a false sense of purpose and to serve as a distraction from the fact “we have NO idea why we are here” Personally I would much rather be driven solely by instinct than by this fractured reason.

I think maybe humans are a transitional species, somewhere above pure instinct but below true understanding. That’s why we feel like we don’t belong. Imagine being just smart enough to want something greater, but too dumb to figure out how to achieve it.
I think some humans (and some animals for that matter) do figure out a genuine purpose. But the vast majority, like you said, simply create distractions and false ideas to mask their ignorance. Being ignorant sucks and no one wants to admit it.
It would be nice to revert to a simple instinctual animal, but that’s not possible. Wouldn’t that be just another denial of our true nature? Maybe if we try our best, we’ll eventually evolve into a species that DOES deserve cognitive thought, one that knows what to do. But until then, we’re just a bunch of prehistoric fish trying to crawl out of the ocean and walk on land.
