“Perfume was first created to mask the stench of foul and offensive odors…
Spices and bold flavorings were created to mask the taste of putrid and rotting meat…
What then was music created for?
Was it to drown out the voices of others, or the voices within ourselves?

To drown the voices chanting in my head. Especially today.
That’s bs. The usual road that inventions take are: guy comes up with something he hasn’t noticed before -> guy realizes it could be useful -> after creating it, guy finds uses for it. Music i’m guessing was created in an accidental way as well, like a caveman just started making noises and other caveman surrounded him watching in awe. Happily for us, it also works wonders to avoid listening to stupid people, hah.
I read an interesting theory on how stringed instruments were first created.
An ancient hunter went bow hunting to procure a meal. The hunter noticed that when he pulled back on the bow’s string and released it, the string made a sound that he liked. He discovered that a tight string made a higher pitched sound, and a string that was more loose made a deeper sound.
He went back to his cave, and attached a string to a piece of wood. He learned that by plucking the string, and holding one finger down on the string against the wood (fretboard) at different intervals, he was able to sequence together a pleasing collection of sounds. He played his single stringed bow for awhile, then he added a second string. He was able to produce even more sounds with his two stringed bow.
This sound maker didn’t help him with hunting, starting fires, or finding a bigger cave to live in. He just liked making sounds, and a few of the other cavemen and cavewomen liked listening to his sounds. They enjoyed the sounds coming from the two stringed bow attached to a piece of wood, it seemed to resonate with them on some primordial level.
After some time had passed someone made a four stringed sound making device. It was called a lute. Then two more strings were added, and they called it a guitar.
That’s the story, but no one really knows for sure. It seems plausible though.
Then some over achiever added 289 strings called it a harp, dropped the mike and walked away.
I might have been one of my ancestors because I’m positively buzzing today.
