.
Stayed up all night long writing this.
I had an ocean of black coffee yesterday, plus I probably took more Tramadol than I should have (yeah, I know. I know).
So as long as I was in that weird kind of headspace, I decided to write some music, just to hear what that part of my brain sounds like.
Apparently it sounds like a snake charmer had a drunken affair with a nervous kangaroo.
Weird.
Instrumentation:
Oboe
Bassoon
Piano
String Bass
Tomtoms
Because it uses two double-reed instruments, and double reeds have a sound quality all their own, I named the piece Buzz And Fall.
“Buzz And Fall” also accurately describes what happens to your brain when you drink an ocean of coffee followed by a few painkillers.

Wow. Makes me wish I had studied more music theory. Very impressive work.
I like it. Reminds me of classic video games 🙂
I agree that the oboe makes it sound sort of “classic video game”-ish.
Weird reedy stuff.
The meter is 7/8 which purposely makes it hard to find a beat to tap a foot to,
Plus the tempo is a busy mess (also done on purpose to reflect the weird brain-space I was in).
I don’t hear the nervous kangaroo.
I feel torn. Like I’m being tempted in opposite directions. Like being seduced.
Come over to the dark side.
We have tacos.
No, wait, today is Thursday.
On Thursday we have BBQ sandwiches.
Hey cordless, really cool piece. Its kinda got a Frank zappa vibe going on.
And ur description is spot on, funny as all hell but spot on.
Tramadol and black coffee, up and down will always make things go a bit sideways. Which in this case is a very good thing. Nice one!!
Up and down and diagonally for awhile too.
I guess I mentioned kangaroo because of the bouncing eighth note octaves in the piano (and sometimes also the bass).
Nintendo should buy this : P
😮
🙂
To me it either sounds like a video game….the boss screen, or a old Nokia ring tone in parts.
Yikes!
Its very cool. I like the drama of it. Some people say that it sounds like a theme song to a video game. I think it sounds like that because you are playing it with the muzak version of the instruments. I bet if you could get an orchestra to play this piece it would sound fabulous.
keep up the good work.
coffee is good > but try not to overdue it with the tramadol.
I wonder if I could make a side-version that our symphony could play…
That’s a great idea!
I found this very relaxing. Thank you for sharing it. You are talented beyond measure.
Thank you! 🙂
Its very good. i dont know how you can write music for so many different instruments. I cant even figure how to write sheet music for even one instrument. You are talented
and I appreciate you posting your stuff so the rest of us can enjoy it.
I have to figure out how to download your stuff/
It’s a fun hobby.
Mixing instruments gets easier with practice. Just like chefs learn how to mix spices and textures and temperatures.
I am going to bed early tonight; my head feels like a nerf ball with tentacles.
(Not sure quite what that means, exactly, but I’m going to sleep it off.)
Aaaaaaannnd I’m awake again!
Slept 3 hours.
Now wide awake in the middle of the night.
FML.
This was the perfect musical accompaniment while indulging in a slice of lemon meringue pie.
(Not a euphemism. I have a delicious dessert in front of me.)
I love lemon pie!
Yay!
Cordless, I just just walked in the door, and listened to your New Composition: Buzz And Fall, i must say i’m really impressed! and i’m not just saying that, you have a gift! may i ask how many cords are you playing i would say three? oh how i wish when i hear these wonderful melodies how i could capitalize off them. i hear a new sound, something unique and different and pleasing to the ear’s. 🙂
The song has waaaaaay more than three chords. 😉
Capitalize…. as in, make money?
Or capitalize, as in, learn intellectual appreciation….?
Not quite sure what you mean there.
But glad you liked it.
Even now that we’ve (sort of maybe) cleared things up about the past, I STILL worry what you will say when I post some brand new artsy thing. 😮
Cordless, HA HA! EVERYTHING!!! make money, learn intellectual appreciation, in my world you get both!! let me explain how you are your good at research, you are Brain Jones of the Rolling Stones, i’d put your style innovations, in with a bunch of other players, simplify your style down to a few cords, keep your hook, then make a song that is different and refreshing, that’s show business. 🙂
what else is involved? the screaming and yelling!!! but in the end we’d come up with a hit!!
When it comes to music, May b I’m so amateur or ignorant then.
One neat thing about music is that everyone can appreciate it in some way.
Some are good at memorizing the words,
some are good at singing it,
some are good at playing it,
some are good at writing it.
some are good at paying attention and listening,
some are good at using it as a tool for relaxation/inspiration/energy.
(And any combination of the above!)
So in that sense, nobody’s ignorant. 🙂
Okay im speechless..
Yu r too good.
Oh, that is really cool! For some reason I couldn’t get it to play at first, so I just now got to listen to it.
Yay! Thank you. Glad you finally got it to work!
I love the Piano bass line, sounds very suspicious. Sounds pirate-ish to me 😀 like for a sneaky, crafty, up to no good sort of scene in something like Pirates of the Caribbean.
You like your irregular time signatures, your a pro with 7/8!!! :0)
It’s only lately that I’ve had an itch to write for the irregular time signatures.
For the longest time I was stuck in a 4/4, 3/4, 6/8 rut.
Something snapped a few months ago, I guess, and I’ve gotten into writing weirder stuff.
My guess is that it’s reflecting the part of me that is gradually becoming less and less centered.
I still occasionally write calm serene stuff, which either means part of me is still at peace, or it means I’m getting better at finding ways to fake it.
I find it hard to think right I’ll compose for this or that signature, I always have to write and figure out what’s what with it when I notate it… It’s not usually anything spectacular 😀
A piece I did for Reflection of Creation called “signs of life” is 9/8 and it still sounds wrong to me. Only way I could change it is to elongate the 8’s to 4’s and do 3 measures of 3/4 but the phrasing was way off so I just left it in the end lol.
Sounds like you’re evolving compositionally and trying out new things, that’s a good thing! creation is hugely experimental. I think the older I get the more daring I am getting at just writing what I like and making the rules up as I go.
