I swear to god, there is something very unnatural about capitalism; it is dehumanizing. I know I was not put on this earth to be a pawn in the system, and neither were you. I think that the industrialization of society was more of a curse than a blessing–sure, things are more convenient than they were 200 years ago, we live longer, have antibiotics, (is that really a good thing?….) but I would trade every convenience of modern society to be free from this system.
I am currently unemployed. Again. Do I want to go out and sell myself into wage slavery, again? NO. That’s right, NO. For some reason, I cannot handle the life that other people willingly lead, without question, until their deaths. I say all this, but I have yet to find a way out, an alternative way that doesn’t involve selling one’s identity and soul for some godforsaken pieces of green paper. I know there are people who live fulfilling lives–we all know there are people who are truly happy out there. What have they done differently? Are they just lucky? Why can’t I find the path that they took and walk it also? Why does it seem that the only path open to me is the one that leads to a life not here on this earth? Perhaps my own life, my real life, will not begin until I take that step into the great beyond…..

Everything you are saying is completely accurate and there is an alternative. You are attempting to endure the model set forth by the ones who profit from the masses. Theory: Society bleeds primal emotions like happiness and gratification out of you with oppressive laws and far-fetched religions. They begin promoting these harsh rules from early childhood and as you become of an age that you biologically begin to think for yourself, they really begin to push conformity. Your mind’s attempt to rebel is often called “teenage angst” or “hormones”. As you develop feelings of loneliness and despair, society then sells you a multitude of things to “make you happy”, for example: Luxury cars, homes, jewelry, alcohol, drugs and the worst of all, the complete acceptance of another and the idea that you live happily ever after, such as your soul mate or Jesus Christ.
I have so much evidence to back this theory that it would take me a year to give it to you verbally. I know this because I have explained them to a few individuals over the years.
You don’t have to take my word for it. Stop looking at the flashy objects they claim will give you salvation and look at what has truly given you happiness in the past. Stop listening to what they’re advertising and try and remember the last thing you bought that made you feel truly gratified…you probably can’t name one, I know I can’t. It’s usually the IDEA that we envision about an object that makes us happy. When we actually obtain this, it can be somewhat disappointing.

@sparrow hi there! Your post is so true, this system is against human nature and against human rights. The group in power (government and rich people) use us like modern slaves. Humans weren’t supposed to be chasing material things to give meaning to their lives. This system is destroying the human soul, destroying millions of lives. More than the half of the population in this planet lives under the poverty line, and the onther half lives afraid of lose what they have.
sowhat and Nolentwohundrend, thank you for your comments. I really appreciate that someone understands. A lot of people think this kind of stuff is crazy talk, or that you are just lazy and ungrateful when you don’t subjugate yourself to the system, so it gives me hope that others feel the same way I do.
While money is necessary for living in society, it’s not all that important, and it doesn’t create happiness. Happiness is, after all, not something you can pursue. It’s a side-effect of doing things you enjoy. It’s a consequence of what your thoughts are centered on throughout the day. If you want to be happy, be indifferent to materialism, yet pursue and center your mind around the things that bring you happiness.
Orangish, you just flipped some kind of switch in my brain. I think I’m going to spend the rest of the evening painting….
I take it that I flipped a good switch, then? lol
That’s just the way things are, it blows. Some people are in a sense “lucky”, they are born into a good family, have a good environment with good people, have no severe health problems and they live great lives. Others have the exact opposite, it’s not fair at all and that’s the way I see it too, that maybe things will be better in the afterlife.
If communism worked, it would be such a good idea. I hate human nature.
I don’t think there is anything unnatural about capitalism. There are many things about our global economic system that may be dehumanizing or unpleasant, but it is definitely not unnatural. You can find some form of greed, selfishness, and indifference in any mammalian species with a social hierarchy. Greed and selfishness is as natural as the laws of physics. It doesn’t matter which “ISM†you choose to use to describe a system. (Capitalism, Socialism, Communism) Any social construct that we create can only be as good or as bad as the leaders within a system.
I don’t have a problem with capitalism if it is simply described as an economic system that is based on private ownership. The thing that I do have a problem with is the social programing of both the rich and the poor that is responsible for the collective insanity, redundancy and ignorance in our society. The collective insanity that we are all guilty of embracing to some extent could be described as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. I also have a problem with other things such as our fractional reserve system, our culture of debt, some patents pertaining to medicine and agriculture, corporate personhood, and corporations that engage in planned obsolescence.
I can definitely relate to all of your problems pertaining to being unemployed and not wanting to be a slave laborer for the rest of your life. The only financial advice that I can give you is to try to develop any talents that you have that would allow you to be self-employed. Learn how to use your own money to make money. It is something that even poor people can do. And engage in something that a wealthy acquaintance of mine likes to call intelligent laziness. It’s all about making the most amount of money that you can for the least amount of work.
