Wristcutters: A Love Story – I found this movie late one night while perusing netflix and after reading the description I was very intrigued as, of course, I am on the same path (I’m too squeamish to cut though) but I also love quirky movies that take you on an adventure and are filled with both deep meaning and light hearted fun… needless to say I was really taken back with how much I enjoyed it and think that many here might get the same joy and satisfaction while riding along with the characters- it certainly let me escape for a bit while still thinking about the complexities of life and relationships.
Also, the movie put me on to some really great music by Gogol Bordello, as one of the characters is partly inspired by the bands’ leader, Eugene Hutz. Â A few of their songs that I really enjoy are “Through the Roof N Underground”, “When Universes Collide”, “Tribal Connection”, “Last One Goes the Hope”. Those are just a few that I think give a good taste of their amazing music style and lyrics.
Oh and Eugene Hutz is incredible alongside Elijah Wood in Everything Is Illuminated, another fantastic movie that is both a light-hearted and deeply moving adventure.
With the weekend about to be here, you should definitely give ’em a try, hope you enjoy them as much as I do (going to watch Wristcutters tonight myself)

It’s a good movie and I thoroughly enjoyed it (and the soundtrack) the first time I saw it. But its concept is part of what scares me about suicide, what if dying really isn’t much of an escape, what if you just end up in a slightly different version of this world, where things are a little grayer and people can’t smile. It’s a far-fetched idea but we have no idea what happens when we go. I would hate commit suicide, thinking I would finally escape from the pain and the negative emotions, only to wake up as the same person in a similar place.
It certainly wouldn’t be a premium choice for an afterlife, but it is after all, an idea simply put forth as a movie plot by the writer… I can personally think of an infinite number of alternatives that would be far worse and likewise ones that are much better but there really is no point. In watching movies I don’t base my enjoyment off of theoretical possibilities to situations that I would not want to happen if it were me… I would not enjoy many movies that way. But aside from that, it seemed he met people and encountered situations in the afterlife that were preferable compared to what he left behind, no doubt there were still problems to deal with but one should be willing to accept any possibility if they are going to voluntarily leave this world… it is after all one of, if not the most serious of choices one can make and shouldn’t be commenced without treating it as such. For me I used to think (as young as 6 or so yrs old my mom told me) that people come back (reincarnated obviously but I doubt I knew that word back then) as animals in their next life… I held onto that notion until I was old enough to realize how awful much of the Earth’s ecosystems and wildlife are thanks to humanity so it might not be as wonderful as I once thought. I’ve also wondered if we simply are born as another human with a blank slate, lacking any knowledge of our previous lives, but again one can only speculate. Whatever the actual case, one pretty cool outcome would be to become a spirit of sorts that can travel throughout space and visit any number of planets, stars, etc. and explore them for eternity… as long as space is infinite.
