Throughout my entire life, I have searched for the answer, the truth to what the purpose of humanity’s existence could be. Being a former Catholic, I believed “god” to be the answer, but the ugly and unpleasant truth is that there WAS no answer from the very beginning. Life never did have a purpose. People tell themselves that there is some cosmic and divine reason for our existence, but that is a false illusion created to hide our fears, and to ease our consciousness, just like how people delude themselves into thinking that they will be reunited with their loved ones in heaven, or that they will be magically reincarnated in their “next” life. It’s all denial. All our dreams, goals, achievements, our memories, experiences and everything we loved, will fade to nothingness in the end. People who lived hundreds and thousands of years ago are completely irrelevant and forgotten today. It’s the same cycle. There are three types of people living in this world. Those that delude themselves about their own significance, those who don’t care and live ignorantly until they inevitably die, and those like me who cannot accept a life without cause and purpose. I will break myself away from these shackles and free myself from this empty existence. Now the question is, who was truly right in the end. If life really does have meaning, we will never know.

You figured all out.
I guess it does not even matter who is right and who is telling lies to himself, as it does not matter if the fly you’re killing is realizing its own death or thinking about shit.
Thanks for your post… i guess that’s why they say ignorance is bliss, wondering if a life without cause or purpose is worth living is mind wrecking… you could say that the good part of it is that you could look for that purpose or choose anything you like and turn it into your purpose… but is that really enough? i guess that answer depends on who you ask it to.
Creating a purpose may motivate you to live and to work towards a goal in your life, but if you look at the bigger picture, It doesn’t really lead anywhere. Each and every one of us are like a building block. Whether you’re a doctor, or the garbage man, we each contribute to advancing the human race. We can bulid a tower taller and taller in the course of hundreds of thousands of years, but where does it lead? Where is humanity headed? You can bulid the tower as high as you can, but it will eventually fall, and that is inevitable. Nothing in this universe will last forever, just as the sun will burn out in the distant future. And that is the most painful part to swallow. The fact that we exist for the sake of existing.
I know, if you look at the bigger picture nothing makes sense at all, that’s why most people don’t ask that question or just ignore it whenever it comes up… you could get stuck for years on that, and at the end you’d only come up with the same answer… either you live knowing there is no sense at all, look for one that cares enough as to live without going crazy… and well, the other obvious solution. And i can also say that i don’t as of yet, know where i stand on that, lol.
Maybe it would’ve just been better if I went with the flow without wondering about these things. Just living life as it is and accepting it without question. But I’ve always been the type to prefer the ugly truth rather than the beautiful lie. I guess It won’t matter anymore cause I’ll finally be able to relieve myself from this mental prison in a few more days.
As a former Catholic, I can tell you the God you thought you had there was a false one. It begins with that. That “church” doesnt stand for the real God, the one who is of the Bible. I can go into details why (if you like).
The fact is, you have been misled as I was.
I am a Christian now, and have experienced the power of God. Don’t know if you know my story, but I should be dead by any standard after what I did. I did not save myself after taking 30 strong pills in the middle of the night and going face down in the sea. with noone around I might add.
And there is plenty more instances in my life, yet another one just last week, that has beyond a doubt shown me God is real, but that He requires you seek Him first, and be serious about it.
Its not easy to not believe in God these days, the world itself belongs to satan, so his power is great (doesnt take a scientist to figure that out).
Both evil and good have a real spirit behind them.
So my recomendation to you, try to see what really is reality.
I have been in your shoes, still am to a large degree, but I know that God wants me to be here and push on.
He does for you as well.
You just don’t see it.
Every religion that you see today is generally based off of other religions in the past. Thousands of years ago, there were no ways of explaining the natural occurrences that happened around the world, hence why “god” became the answer to everything. Do you know why religion is so widely practiced today? There are many factors that come into play. Religion induces fear into man by claiming that they will burn in hell for eternity, but then gives false hope by claiming to offer salvation. Exploiting the fear in people is one of the most effective methods of control (there are plenty of evidence in the history books). Then, there is the inclination to justify ones fears of death by denying its very nature. No one wants to disappear when they die, so what happens? They once again create a false sense of security through the practice of religion in hopes of going to “paradise”. People are inclined to believe only what they want to believe. They are biased, and will sub consciously Ignore any facts that may prove their beliefs to be wrong. Muslim terrorists can sacrifice their lives through bombing so readily, but why? Because they are told that they will find paradise in the afterlife. It’s the same concept that you believe to be different, but is actually not. I know what it’s like to have faith in god. The very act of questioning his existence is a sin, I know. But if you keep your eyes closed because you’re too afraid to face the reality, then you’ll always be living in a dream. I will not say that I’m 100% right and true, because I’m not afraid to say that I may be possibility wrong. I’m only human. Don’t believe in something so blindly, that’s what the Nazi’s did.
I hope you can help me understand what you think is the nature of this purpose or significance of life and why you think the alternative to having a purpose is suicide.
According to your post, “There are three types of people living in this world. Those that delude themselves about their own significance, those who don’t care and live ignorantly until they inevitably die, and those like me who cannot accept a life without cause and purpose.”
A category that’s saliently left out, here, is people who accept the absence of purpose yet don’t find that problematic for their continued existence. These people certainly exist: schools of buddhism that advocate seeing past illusion without claiming the transcendent good of nirvana, nihilist philosophers of various convictions.
Why not think, instead of in teleological terms, in terms of profane preferences, desires, and emotions?
I think that would fit in with the second category. They may not be ignorant, but they certainly don’t care much about whether there’s purpose or meaning. If I had to explain life in my point of view, I’d say it’s like watching a movie in which your memories of it are completely erased after watching it. Whether the movie is brilliant, terrible, long, or short, in the end it would have been pointless to watch. It depends on the individual. For me, I cannot stand pointless things
