I have a friend who consistently wears long sleeves. Today during class her sleeve fell up to reveal cuts all up her arm. She quickly pulled up her sleeve and doesn’t think I noticed. I am very worried about her because I had a lot of self harm issues and I don’t want her to go down the same path as me.
Should I tell the school councillor? Should I talk to my friend? I don’t know what to do.

I think you should talk with her about it first. Tell her that you ´ve been in that place and that you understand and are always there for yher and that she can call you any time when she is thinking about self harming. Thats what I would do at least. I wouldn´t tell the school councilor because even if it may be a good thing to do I think she could think of it as some kind of “betrayal”. Even if its not and you would do it with intention to help her I don´t think she would see it that way. The mind of a depressed person is really strange and not logical. I would suggest to talk about it with her at first and if that doesnt help and you would be seriously concerned about her then go and tell it to some authority.
Talk to her first. Try not to back her into a corner by telling the school because that can just make things worse.
I think you should try talking to her first. Especially since you have first hand experience with self harm. Maybe down the road you can encourage her to seek help on her own.
DEFINITELY DO NOT TELL THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR. Are you fucking kidding me? What sane person would do that? You are not this girls “keeper”, for god sake, leave her alone. IF SHE WANTED TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT ALL THE TIME SHE HAD SLICED HER WRIST, SHE WOULD. She covers these for a reason.
Straight brutally honest. But fr if you tell the school they could have her committed or something crazy.
I uses to self harm. And I just wished that someone would tell me that they’re there for me. Pretty much hold my hand through it, uk?
Remind them that scars don’t go. They haunt you forever and they have a support system that’s ready to catch them if they fall. Let them know that even if you don’t know everything and ur not perfect, ur ready to learn. Show openess to knowing their situation and learning about the subject.
