Why not?

I ask the same question you do. People say they want you to be safe. But why is that? I mean, what are we supposed to be safe, to stick around for? So we can pay taxes our governments can use for things they consider important, like politicians’ lavish lifestyles? So when our friends need someone to borrow money from or to give them a ride to the airport or to do some other grunt task, we’re here like a rusty old carpenter’s knife forgotten at the bottom of some scrap metal heap ’til we’re needed? Seems to me there are largely two types of people we’ll meet: the vast majority who don’t give a damn until we do something to upset them or until they perceive they can use us for their benefit; and those who, for their own reasons, do sincerely wish we would just die. For the rest who deny this, I say, “Where the hell are you?”

We’re not supposed to say things like that, but if we didn’t live lives corroborating this perspective, we wouldn’t say this in the first place. I agree with you that nothing matters besides death. A philosopher wrote, and I agree whole-heartedly, that the most important philosophical question is whether we should remain alive.
