We sometimes want to go back to the past but we are disturbed when we theorize that a visit to the past may not be what we envisioned. The past is DEAD. If we go there then there is nothing but rotting and decaying reality which poorly mimics the present reality. Going back to the past is like digging up an old body and expecting that body to communicate like it did when it was ALIVE. We want so much to go back to the past but what happens when realize the truth that what we wish for will be disgusting and perverted – which is a far cry from what we really wanted.

@emptiness – it’s hard to say, because it’s different for everyone. But I find that if I set a goal in front of me, it will detract me from looking behind. Getting engaged works for some, but I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone.
I’m married and have friends. I’m just angry with one friend who screwed me over. I can’t stop asking myself why and hurting about it. It’s so hard to move on because I want to know why.
@emptiness – you could tell everyone about it, and try to work it out. But my suspician is that this would be ultimately unsatisfying, and you will only annoy your current friends by continuing to bang on about it. You have to just let go. Focus on the friends you DO have. Live in the moment? You will only drive yourself mad by asking the question WHY…

@emptiness, you just have to accept that you can never fully understand other peoples motivtions and at the same time you can never control anyone elses actions. All you can control is your own actions. No amount of discussion will ever change that fact. so just try to live your life, and let go…

A reference point can only be found in the past and not the present or the future. It is the standard by which we compare everything that has happened since. If one thinks logically, the reference point is the origin and foundation of everything that has come to pass. Even if one could go back in time, it is inherently so, that one regret would simply replace the other. From this site it is apparent, that the grass is not greener on the other side which is why the various posters think about things from an entirely different perspective yet come to the same conclusion about life. The things they want are contradictory; beauty, wealth, education, family etc. They always attach the most emphasis to the one thing that is missing.
@duke that is true but maybe that reference point needs to be constant and changing and fluid… constantly updating… maybe that is how one can maintain having a point of reference without getting ‘stuck in the past’.
